Summer Camp Programs

The 2009 summer camp season is just around the corner and the camp staff is working feverishly to bring girls and troops alike a fun camping experience like never before. We are proud to announce that Camp Piperwood, Camp Timbercrest and Camp Seven Hills are all ACA certified for meeting stringent safety, staff, property and program guidelines.

With the holiday season quickly approaching, consider summer camp gift certificates. They make the perfect gift this holiday season. For more information or to purchase, please call the council Shop in your area.

New programs offered for this year’s camp season include fun, age-appropriate, exciting programs such—

  • Groovy Girls is a program that allows girls to create their own groovy girl character. As a part of this program, girls will receive their own Groovy Girl Doll.
  • For girls who enjoying singing, “Camp Seven Hills is Alive with the Sound of Music” program will offer girls the chance to make their own musical instrument and entertain their friends and family at a talent show.
  • Girls will be pampered with facials, aromatherapy and learn relaxation techniques at Spa Timbercrest. Girls will take home natural skin products such as bath salts, facial masks and lip balm that they make themselves.
  • Horseback riding will still be available at Camps Seven Hills and Timbercrest. Girls can enjoy English riding at Camp Seven Hills and Western riding at Camp Timbercrest.
  • Qualified staff is certified in First Aid/CPR, Risk Management, Child Development and interview screening process to include criminal and sex offender background checks.

Early bird discounts, sibling discounts and financial aid are still available.

The following properties will run summer day camp programs. They are Camp Piperwood, Camp Windy Meadows, Camp Sky High and Camp Timbercrest.

The following summer camp programs will be “rested” for the upcoming camping season. They are Camp Pinewood, Camp Zoar Valley and Camp Oak Orchard.

A: “Resting” is a term used to indicate that summer camp programs will not be used for the upcoming camp season.

Q: Why were these summer camp programs chosen to be “rested?”
A: For the safety of our campers and volunteers, and to operate the camp programs at full capacity, the council has made the decision to “rest” summer camp programs being held at Camps Pinewood, Zoar Valley and Oak Orchard.

Q: Does this mean that some of the camps are being closed?
A: No, “resting” means that camp programs will not be operating during the camp season. The decision to “rest” camp programs is an operational decision. The Girl Scouts of Western New York Board of Directors is the only one who can make the decision to close camp properties. The Board has not made any decisions to close camp sites.

Q: Will these summer camp programs run in 2010?
A: At the end of each camp season, we evaluate staff, campers and parents to assess the needs for the upcoming camp season. At this time, our focus is in providing age-appropriate programs that align with the council’s mission. All programs for the 2010 camp season will be reviewed at a later date.

Q: How will camp staff be impacted?
A: Camp staff from other properties will be encouraged to apply for summer camp openings at other sites.

Q: My troop has encampments/camporee scheduled at Girl Scout camp sites. Do we have to reschedule?
A: If your troop has scheduled an encampment/camporee at Camp Pinewood and Camp Oak Orchard, your reservation is confirmed. Reservations are still being accepted at Camps Pinewood and Oak Orchard.
In fact, all outdoor programs currently scheduled for Camps Pinewood, Oak Orchard, Seven Hills, Timbercrest, Piperwood, Sky High and Windy Meadows are still being held.

Q: Why aren’t outdoor programs offered at Zoar Valley?
A: For the safety and well-being of our campers, volunteers and staff, we are currently “resting” the camp site.

Q: What happens to Dogwood Day Camp?
A: The council is currently looking for options for Camp Dogwood. As soon as we have more information, we will let you know.

Q: How will this change affect registration fees for camp?
A: Day camp prices will range from $135-145 and resident camp from $225-235. In most instances, the price includes day trips. Specialty programs will vary in price.
