Getting Ready To Lead

 A Troop Is Easy!

Leadership Troop Trainings

Step 1: Once you have submitted your application, references and background check, complete GSUSA’s Girl Scouting 101.  This course will give you an orientation to the organization, information on being an effective leader, and information on programming for your girls’ grade level.  You can find the course on GSUSA’s website here: http://training.girlscouts.org  Just use the password “aboutGS101”. You will be prompted to enter your contact information. Be sure to choose our council, Western New York, so that we will be notified when you’ve completed the course.

Step 2: Attend Troop Essentials- this orientation gives you an overview of Girl Scouts of Western New York policies and procedures and everything you need to know to get your troop up and running.  Contact your Membership Manager for the facilitator for your area.

Step 3: Be sure to follow up with your service unit manager about attending a Journey Workshop. Council Staff and Volunteers will be presenting this hands-on workshop at service unit meetings in the coming months. There you will have the opportunity to see the materials and get ideas and tips for customizing the Journeys, and making the experience fun for the girls and the adults!

Are you a continuing leader? Follow this process:

Step 1: Confirm which courses you have already completed. Proceed with training based on the following guidelines:

  •  If you’ve been a leader for 3 years or less, that means you were part of the track to complete Online Orientation, Leadership Essentials and Grade Level Training. Girl Scouting 101 replaces these courses.  While you may not need the orientation to the organization, you will want to watch the video beginning with the What Girl Scouts Do section.  You can find the course on GSUSA’s website here: http://training.girlscouts.org  Just use the password “aboutGS101”. You will be prompted to enter your contact information. Be sure to choose our council, Western New York, so that we will be notified when you’ve completed the course.
