Basic Leadership Training
Basic Leadership Training must be completed within six (6) months of your appointment as a troop leader.
It includes three components:
• Service Unit Orientation (contact your Service Unit Manager to schedule this training)
• Leadership Essentials
• Grade–Level Training
Prior to completing the Basic Leadership Training, a volunteer must be a registered member of the Girl Scout Council and must have submitted a Volunteer Application to their Service Unit Manager or Volunteer Manager.


Leadership Essentials
Welcome to Leadership Essentials. This adult learning experience will help prepare volunteers to effectively facilitate the
Girl Scout Leadership Experience. (This course was previously known as B1 or Getting Started.)
By the end of this adult learning experience participants will be able to:
• Explain the meaning of the 3 keys of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
• Demonstrate how to use resources to support the delivery of the Girl Leadership Experience, including the Journeys with accompanying Adult Guides.
• Describe how to facilitate activities so they are girl-led, cooperative and learn-by-doing.
• Convey the value of being purposeful in one’s leadership.

All volunteers in GSWNY are invited to come and party with the members of Silver Trefoil. We will have some games and prizes, outstanding food (appetizers and desserts), great fellowship with like-minded people, and fun – fun – fun! We will also have a Chinese Auction. This is our thank you for all of the time, work, sweat and tears your have given to the Girl Scouts of Western New York. It’s a small thank you but it is heart felt in the extreme. Troop Travel I—Basic
This training is for troops planning an overnight trip within 200 miles of the council's geographic area. Learn the requirements to take a troop on a trip and tips to assist with planning an overnight trip. Troop Travel II
This training is required for troops traveling over 200 miles outside the council's geographic area and for trips of two or more nights. Information will be available on how to plan your troop trip and tips to assist with planning. Timeframes, travel arrangements, necessary forms, obtaining proper permission, and council procedures will be discussed. Participants must have taken a trip within 200 miles of the council’s geographic area and completed Troop Travel I—Basic first.

Basic Troop Camping (Level 1–Lodge Camping)
This training teaches required basic outdoor skills, overnight preparation, and the fundamentals of outdoor safety. Menu planning, outdoor cooking, program activity ideas, and a review of necessary equipment for troop camping are also included. Training fulfills the appropriate training necessary for troop lodge camping as per council policy. “To participate in troop camping, appropriate training, within five (5) years, must have been completed and necessary personnel must accompany the troop (i.e., nurse, lifeguard, etc.). Permission must be obtained from the Service Unit Manager or Service Unit Team before planning this activity. (Parent/caregiver slips must be used.)”

Beyond the Lodge–Trailblazers II (Level 2)
Before embarking on the adventure of tent camping, take this course to learn the basic camp craft skills, cooking tips, and procedures for pitching and sleeping in a tent. This training is held in conjunction with Tent Camping (Girls Perspectives) to give you an opportunity to receive training with the girls (register girls to attend through Girls Perspectives).
This training is required for a leader taking girls tent camping.

If you would like to take a group of girls on a backpacking adventure, attend this course. It provides instruction on basic backpacking skills, preparing and planning a weekend trip, and the proper equipment and food necessary for success. Have fun making 15 inexpensive crafts (different from those taught last year) that you can teach the girls in your troop. Patterns and instructions will be provided, and the instructors will provide hands-on help. There will be crafts for each program level.

Identify and recognize the symptoms of cardiac emergencies in adults and children. Required for the adult acting as the primary First-Aider at a Girl Scout activity, event, or trip. (CPR certification must be current whenever a Level 1 first aid is required.)

We are pleased to be able to offer CPR and First Aid courses both through the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association at a reduced rate for Girl Scout volunteers. Both organizations have recently changed their course design and books. The courses offered now are almost identical in content. We will be using the new materials for both. The most noticeable difference is that the American Red Cross requires CPR recertification every year and First Aid recertification every three years. The American Heart Association requires CPR and First Aid recertification every two years. If you are currently certified through the American Red Cross and you want to change to the American Heart Association certification, you need to take the full course. We will be offering child and adult CPR per the standards set in Safety Wise by GSUSA.

The complete course includes CPR for adults and children. This course is for the volunteer who has never had CPR or CFA certification and for those whose certification has expired. The course includes video instruction, lecture, discussion, hands-on practice, instructor feedback, written exams and skills testing.

Responding to Emergencies (Level II First Aid)

Masters of Disaster Training
The Girl Scout motto is “Be Prepared.” Be prepared for what? Would you know what to do if there was a flood? Lightening? Snowstorm? What kind of supplies would you need? How much would you need?
Many troops have already completed the requirements for the Prepared and Ready Patch on our website. Now we have an opportunity for you to join us for a special training for leaders only that will look at your general preparedness in the face of a natural disaster. The materials we will use are from the National Red Cross Masters of Disaster program whose goal is to prepare as many people as possible in the face of an emergency or disaster.
