Brownie Computer Expert Badge
In this two-hour session, Scouts, ages 8-14, work through a variety of fun activities necessary to obtain a Computer Expert Badge. They will get hands-on experience with the latest technology from Microsoft as they discover the versatility of computers, safe use and more.
During the workshop, Scouts will use Bing to visit their Scout troop’s website or ImagineCup.com, research an interesting animal, take a virtual road trip with Bing Maps, plan a world adventure and research directions from one place to another! Scouts will create a short travel guide with Office 365 using the information discovered to provide information on language, money, and holidays.
Next, they will create and send an e-card or a thank you card and create an online message to the leader of their country about something that’s important to them. Scouts will also try out the Surface Pro 3, to create an invitation, a treasure map, a flyer for a fund-raising event, a lemonade stand sign or a photo presentation.
Then, it’s game on! Scouts will be able to challenge themselves and others as they try out the newest version of online games including Kodu and Project Spark. They’ll also be able to try a Dance off Challenge on Xbox, and create their own playlist! Scouts will have a blast trying new activities on the latest available apps and Microsoft devices.
In addition to this session, Scouts will participate in other activities to earn their badges both before and after the session. It’s likely they will not able to complete all activities during the session. Be assured that they may be finished with review by the Scout troop leader at a later time. Keep in mind that Microsoft does not provide Scout badges. It is the responsibility of the troop leader to determine if each Scout has earned the badge and to issue them accordingly.
Junior Digital Photography Badge
Snapping and sharing a photo has never been easier. Scouts can use photographs to capture family memories, good times with friends, and selfies. Photography also allows Scouts a chance to be creative and express their imagination using photographic elements such as lighting, composition, depth, color, and content. Going far beyond taking the ubiquitous selfie, in this workshop, Scouts will learn to take expressive photographs, edit them, and present them as objects of art using a variety of Microsoft products and devices.
At the end of this 90-minute Workshop, Scouts ages 10-12 will:
- Work through a variety of activities necessary to obtain a Digital Photographer Badge. (80% of badge requirements will be completed)
- Learn about the history of photography and the development of cameras
- Understand composition and make amazing photo edits using a Surface Pro and Windows 10

Papermaking Workshop
Students will learn about the history of papermaking and have the opportunity to produce several pieces of their own. Roll up your sleeves as you’re going to get wet. Make your own paper in any color and thickness, adorned with flowers, beads, ribbons, even insects. It’s amazing how simple it is. Rip up bits of existing paper, from newsprint to watercolor paper, put into a household blender with water and grind into pulp. Using the nifty frame you’ve built from wood, duct tape and window screen, the pulp is sloshed on top, forming a wet layer of paper mulch. We flip this onto a sheet of cloth and allow it to dry, forming a whole new sheet of paper from your torn bits. Add any sort of embellishments such as string, sparkles or butterfly wings to make it uniquely your own.
Length of Program: minimum 1.5 hours, can be extended
Maximum Capacity: 12, can accommodate 20 with an assistant
Age Level: 7+
Fun Sculpture Workshop
Length of Program: minimum 1.5 hours, can be extended to 5 hours
Maximum Capacity: 15
Age Level: 7+
This program deals with the creative, historical, aesthetic, and critical aspects of sculpture. Students will learn about the history of sculpture and have the opportunity to produce several pieces of their own. Roll up your sleeves and stick your hands into a bucket of plaster! We need to mix out the air bubbles before we pour it into a milk carton to set. Later we’ll use butter knives and nutpicks to carve. Other three dimensional pieces can be created with bendable wire that can be twisted into figural shapes, We can also use pieces of wood we glue together to create a new shape, finishing by painting the surface. How about using plaster-coated strips to make a cast of your foot or hand? There are all kinds of ways to make three dimensional art objects. We’re going to explore several in this very messy hands-on workshop.
Hand Bookbinding Workshop
Length of Program: minimum 1.5 hours, can be extended
Maximum Capacity: 12
This program deals with Hand Bookbinding. Students will produce several finished books during the class. We will learn how to fold signatures, use an awl to punch holes and stitch together our pages. Students will choose paper for the end pages and glue them onto the front and back of the signatures. After gluing the binding we will cut the page edges cleanly. Paper backed cloth will be glued onto cardboard for the covers; the signatures will be correctly placed inside and glued in. Voila! Your own book!
Rubbings Workshop
Length of Program: 1-2 hours
Maximum Capacity: 25
Age Level: 7+
Students will produce multiple prints on paper or rubbings. This process is easy to learn and require few supplies. Scissors, glue, cardboard, good quality paper, crayons, colored pencils, and markers will be provided for the first project. We will begin with a brief lecture about artistic printmakers, followed by an outline of the basic procedures. Participants will use coloring tools to create images on paper. Pieces of cardboard are cut into various shapes and glued onto a large sheet of cardboard. A sheet of drawing paper, handmade paper, rice paper or another type of paper is laid on top. The artist rubs their coloring tool on top of the approximate placement of the cardboard to create an image. Areas may be rubbed over several times with different colors for unusual effects. This may be the final image or the artist may continue to refine the paper surface with various media such as markers and pencils after it has dried. We will complete the session with a critique of the finished works.
Cyanotype Photography Workshop
Length of Program: 1-6 hours
Maximum Capacity: 25
Students will produce blue photographic prints on paper or cloth using Cyanotype, one of the earliest and most beautiful non-silver processes in photography. This workshop, photographic in nature, requires no darkroom or extensive equipment. We’ll take something old and something blue and give it a new interpretation. These blue prints are made with the help of the sun so bring your sunglasses. We will begin with a brief lecture about the historical aspects of photography. Participants will review the safety procedures, coat paper or cloth with light sensitive chemicals using a foam brush in a darkened area (not completely dark), and work on their negatives. To make a negative students may draw on a transparent sheet using a permanent marker, cut out and tape down pieces of old photographic negatives, or use the copy machine to transfer a previously created image to a transparent sheet. Participants will place their negative and interestingly shaped objects such as stencils on their now dry paper or cloth and carry outside to the sun (weather permitting) or under the light table. Exposure takes approximately five to ten minutes. For development the paper or cloth is placed under running water for five minutes. Afterwards, the images are hung up to dry for about one hour. Students will be encouraged to comment on others’ work in an aesthetic and critical manner before the close of the session. This workshop is a lot of fun! Bring your imagination and a sense of humor.
Monoprints Workshop
Length of Program: minimum 1.5 hours
Maximum Capacity: 20
Age Level: 7+
Students will produce prints on paper. Students will follow a step-by-step procedure in the production of their prints. They will begin by drawing shapes on cardboard and cutting them out. These shapes will be glued onto a large sheet of cardboard. The students will use brayers to apply ink to the surface or their cardboard. A sheet of paper will be placed on top of the inked surface. The students will rub the back of the paper to transfer the ink. The paper is carefully peeled off the cardboard creating a print. Each print should be allowed to completely dry before undergoing any additional marking such as drawing or writing on the surface. Students will be encouraged to comment on others’ work in an aesthetic and critical manner before the close of the session.
Three Dimensional Bookbinding Workshop
Length of Program: approximately 1.5-2 hours per book
Maximum Capacity: 15, can accommodate 25 with an assistant
This unit of study marries the art of bookmaking with the teaching of literacy. Students will learn four sculptural book designs that will promote and encourage their writing skills as they write stories to fill the pages of these books. There are four books students can learn how to make in this workshop. These books include a Kaleidoscope book that opens like a fan or a DNA Helix. A second book is a Flag book that has a series of pages that interweave. Another book is a Tunnel book that opens like a diorama. The final book is a pop-up book that has parts that move with the action of turning the pages.

Twists N Turns presents a unique and interactive detective game experience in which Girl Scouts become active participants in our immersive stories and must work together as a team to unravel the plot before time runs out! We aim to engage and excite our participants in our obstacle-driven mysteries, leaving them with memories that will last forever. In order to solve these mysteries girls, need to demonstrate courage and confidence in their guesses with various puzzles and riddles. With rigorous practice, I believe any Girl Ccout can train their mind to have a heightened sense of awareness. This will not only help them in their schooling but will also allow them to see the world differently, improving their life skills. It will bring a new dimension to their lives and boost their confidence.
They will be solving a virtual murder mystery. The mystery will be presented to them through images and text on the screen. I will narrate the story and explain each puzzle and riddle, encouraging them to use what they see or hear to make informed guesses. They will look for misdirections and break down the steps necessary to solve the puzzles. Then, they will share and debate hypotheses with their classmates, ultimately working together to solve the mystery before class ends. The puzzles and riddles will involve colors, wordplay, shapes and math.
We serve both large group events and events for individual
troops.
Scouts take our mystery classes to earn:
- Junior Detective’s badge
- Cadette Special Agent badge
After they solve the mystery, scouts will receive a
certificate of completion and puzzle/riddle worksheets that they can
complete after class.
