This course for girls and their female adult companions at Camp Timbercrest is where you can earn your NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) Hunter Education Card. This card will allow you to purchase a NYS hunting license. The course will be taught by NYSDEC certified hunter safety educators and is co-sponsored with the Becoming An Outdoor Woman program and New York Outdoor Women, Inc. We will be on the new Target Sports Range. There is a required homework component that must be completed prior to coming to the course and proof of completion must be brought to the course. This is an all-women course for a girl and female adult companion. Both will earn a Hunter Education Card.
Course Topics Covered: Firearm handling and safety techniques, history of firearms, knowledge of firearms and ammunition, proper gun handling and storage, marksmanship fundamentals, hunting laws and regulations, principles of wildlife management and wildlife identification, outdoor safety, hunter ethics, hunter responsibility toward wildlife, the environment, landowners, and the general public. Age Restrictions/Requirements: Students must be 12 years or older to take this course. (Note: In New York State the minimum age to hunt is 12 years old). Students under 16 years old must have a signed permission slip (PDF) from a parent or legal guardian to allow for the handling and shooting of a firearm during this course.
Timbercrest Tidbits is sponsored and subsidized by the Friends of Timbercrest. Fee includes a unique Tidbit segment for girls to add around the Timbercrest patch. Patches will be sold at the event. $2.00 each; exact cash or check. Camp will be open for check-in at 8:00 a.m. with breakfast snacks and hot beverages available. Lunch and snacks are included in the fee along with all educational materials and equipment which are being provided through the NYSDEC Hunter Education Program. Do not bring your own firearms. The event will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. Bring a reusable water bottle and be prepared to spend the day outdoors (event is rain or shine). Only thunderstorms or high winds will cause modification. Wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots. Indoor restrooms are available at the Program Center at Bellinger Lodge and latrines at unit locations. Masks and appropriate social distancing will be expected as dictated by current protocols at the time of the event.
