On July 1, 2008 four Legacy councils, Buffalo & Erie County, Genesee Valley, Niagara County and Southwestern New York, combined to create Girl Scouts of Western New York. This was done as a nationwide restructuring policy of GSUSA. The roots of our council go back almost as early as when Juliette Low started Girl Scouting in the USA in 1912. Buffalo & Erie County Council had its first troop in 1917. Margaret Castle started her Niagara County Troop in 1916.
Each Legacy council had its own History or Archives committee. The individual collections are in the process of being combined. The Primary collection is housed at the Lockport office, 5000 Cambria Road. This is the location that in 2017 CEO Alison Wilcox and the GSWNY Board of Directors approved that we use the facility as a shared space for Office, Museum and meeting space, thus the beginning of the GSWNY Girl Scout History Museum.
Secondary or circulating Items in the collection may be loaned out for use by filling out this form. View our History Committee Item Loan Process here
We welcome donations to the collection by filling out a donation form on the website. We also would welcome anyone who would be interested on working on the council History Committee and in the museum, giving presentations about Girl Scout history.
