GSWNY provides adult training courses conducted by skilled and enthusiastic volunteer facilitators throughout the year. Volunteers are encouraged to take advantage of as many courses as they can to provide the best growth experiences possible for girls.

New Troop Leadership Volunteers (Troop Co-Leaders)
Grade Level Training

Grade Level training provides essential information to new leaders and those changing levels. Developmental characteristics, troop management, program options and more will be covered.  Grade Level training is required for:

  • all new leaders within 30 days of volunteer approval
  • all leaders changing levels within 30 days of 1st meeting of the Girl Scout year

Outdoor Training

TROOP CAMP TRAINING

Your scouts want to go camping but you don’t know where to start?  No worries!  We’ll train you!

Step 1: Troop Camping Orientation. Offered locally this class focuses on:

  • planning your camping trip
  • safety and regulations required by GSWNY and NY State
  • the Girl Adult Partnership  and using the GSLE in the outdoors

Troop Camping Orientation is required before taking Outdoor Skills courses

Step 2:  Outdoor Skills 1 – Lodge or Outdoor Skills 2 – Tent/Cabin.  All Outdoor Skills courses will take place at GSWNY camp properties.  

Outdoor Skills 1 – Lodge

(prerequisite – Troop Camping Orientation)

basic meal prep (including no cook meals, stick cooking, one-pot meals, pie iron cooking)

Fire building and fire safety basics

Leave No Trace basics

Hiking basics

Knots, bandana, and pocket knife basics

Outdoor Skills 2 – Tent/Cabin

(prerequisites – Troop Camping Orientation and Outdoor Skills 1 – Lodge

Troop Camping I prior to Sept. 2017)

Intermediate campfire meal prep (skillet/griddle cooking, foil packet cooking, Dutch oven cooking)

Camp stove cooking

Gas Lantern use

Compass skills, map and trail reading

Intermediate knots, bandana, and pocket knife use


 

Attention Adult Volunteers!
Canoe Training Course Now Available.

Professional guide/s from Adventures in Fitness will take you through the necessary skills, emergency procedures, rescues and required equipment necessary for flat water canoeing. Upon completion you will receive a certificate that outlines the canoeing skills learned.

First Aid and CPR Training

These standard First Aid and CPR courses are offered by certified Girl Scout volunteers and include adult and child CPR and basic first aid. Certification for American Red Cross First Aid and CPR is valid for 2 years. With our partner agency, EPIC Trainings, Inc., we offer full day and blended learning classes.

Blended Learning Classes - This class includes an online pre-session portion and an in-person skills session. The online portion must be completed prior to the skills session in order to receive certification. When you register, you will receive information to access the online portion.
*You will need a computer with speakers (or headphones).
*Dress for working on the floor. You must be able to physically demonstrate the skill in order to be certified.
*Do not arrive late for training; instructors reserve the right to deny certification to those who arrive late.
*Questions you may have about this training should be directed to mail@epictrainings.com.
